…There is something in the horse’s physique that is beneficial to man’s spirit…
It is with this spirit in mind that the “Braida dei Perini” Horseback Riding Association organizes horseback riding courses for the physically challenged. Our highly specialised instructors create and develop a profoundly sensitive relationship between the horse and the physically challenged person, whose motor skills will also benefit from this wonderful experience.
This therapeutic course can be roughly divided into three steps whose order can be alternated: an introduction and first approach to the horse, ground work, and, lastly, riding with a saddle. The first step, conducted with the assistance of a therapist, includes a presentation of the horse in its entirety as well as the parts of the animal.
The patient is then introduced to ground work which includes horse control. The physically challenged student, with the assistance of a therapist, will practice cleaning, brushing, taking care of and saddling a horse, thus learning to use every part of his/her body correctly and suitably; he/she will acquire the ability to program and organize tasks, develop and/or better his/her laterality and the ability to act in space and time. Furthermore, ground work is very important in that it enables the physically challenged person to learn to organize his/her movements along with those of the horse in the allotted area, keeping in mind that one depends upon the other. Riding with a saddle then completes the activity.
The therapist can propose several exercises which are adapted to the patient’s pathology or to a pre-planned activity.
